βBut you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnessesβ¦β β Acts 1:8
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a distinct and powerful experience for every believer. It empowers us to witness, live victoriously, and operate in spiritual gifts. According to scripture, the initial physical evidence of the Baptism is speaking in tongues.
We affirm that speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This is not merely one of many gifts β it is the evidence that the believer has received this empowering. All believers can receive this gift.
1 Corinthians 12 refers to public gifts for the church, like tongues and interpretation. But 1 Corinthians 14 teaches us that tongues are also a personal prayer language. Paul said, 'He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God... he edifieth himself.' This use does not require interpretation, as it is communication with God. Paul says, βI will pray with the Spirit, and I will pray with understanding also.β
Ask yourself:
Lord Jesus, I believe that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for me. I ask You now to fill me completely. I receive by faith the promise of the Father. I yield myself to You and open my mouth to speak the new language You give me. Empower me to walk in Your Spirit daily. Amen.
Write about what it means to you that the Holy Spirit dwells in you. What role does speaking in tongues play in your prayer life?
